Freedom

FREEDOM noun free·dom \ˈfrē-dəm\  the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action

We’re exiting the train and breaking through the crowd of the railroad station in Amsterdam. Last sunrays are finding their way to the large entrance hall. One of the passangers has leaned his suitcase onto a piano and now lives through his five minutes of fame with the help of the relaxed jazz melody. I’m thinking how it’s  a pity that I have completely neglected the keys so now the only melody that is still inscribed into my memory is an ode to cliches and chinese music boxes – Fur Elise. I try to find the familiar face in the restless crowd and quickly succeed. Marko, my best friend, stands at the door. With his right hand he signals his whereabouts, while holding three cans of beer in his other hand – long story short, he looks like the Statue of Liberty is supposed to look like if you’re asking me. And thank God you’re not!

Odlepila sam. Sa prvim udahom predvečernjeg vazduha spucala me zaljubljenost i to ona detinjasta. Od 1 do 10, ocena 15. Head over heels. Osmeh od uva do uva. Potpuna sloboda.

I’ll keep it short. An Important fact is that I went on this trip with my brother, with minimum expectations and completly unplanned. Since I am relatively easy on happiness, I’ve developed the skill to recognize the situations, places and events that perticulary sweep me of my feet. Exactly that happened in Amsterdam. I flipped. With the first breath I took of the evening air, the overwhelming feels shot me up. From 1 to 10, the mark  is 15. Head over heels. A smile from ear to ear. Total freedom.

In every street you find a piece of self thought lost long ago and you didn’t even know where you were all these years until, just like that, you’re right here, on the Amsterdam’s paving stone, found and complete. Everything is new. Nothing is unkown.

Udahnite duboko i bukirajte tu kartu. Verujte mi na reč!

Par prijateljskih saveta:

  2. Iznajmite bicikl. Ne, ne možete bez njega. Uštedite sebi vreme i infiltrirajte se u lokalno stanovništvo like a pro. Inkognito 🙂
  3. Opustite se. Guess what? NIŠTA ne morate.
  4. Izgubite se. Skrenite s puta. Ignorišite vodiče. Svi putevi vode baš tamo gde želite da budete.
  5. Pametno birajte smeštaj. Možete da imate sve – dobru lokaciju, komfor i estetiku, a da pritom ostanete u granicama svog budžeta.

Breathe in deeply and book that ticket. Trust me!

Couple of friendly advices:

  1. Wake up early. Good news is that ‘early’ doesn’t mean too early in Amsterdam. 8:30 is enough to avoid the crowd and enjoy the complete tranquility in the nearby park. Capuccino + hot bagel = YES
  2. Rent a Bike. No, you can’t do without it. Save yourselves some time and infiltrate into the local population like a ninja. Incognito 🙂
  3. Relax. Guess what? You don’t have to do anything.
  4. Get Lost. Get off road. Ignore the guides. All the roads lead just where you wont them to lead.
  5. Be smart while choosing your accomodation. You can have it all – good location, comfort with esthetics, and be well within the limits of your budget.

Preporuka:

Amsterdam me je, međutim, potpuno uništio. Planiram povratak. Pretražujem avionske karte i hiljade kvadratnih metara najušuškanijih stanova i hotela.

Recommendation:

Hotel No.377 House  has a great location, is well connected with the key points of interest in the City and a few minutes walk away from Vondelpark and Rijksmuseum. It’s a representative of the chic modern boutique hotels and an excellent choice if you love the idea of a mixture between luxury and affordable prices.

Additional observation: Despite the popular belief, you will save money if you reserve directly over the hotel’s internet page

After days of traveling and returning home, I have a habit of feeling depressed. I get all nostalgic while scrolling gigabytes of photos from the journey. Sighs and melodramatic captions on Instagram are a must. Amsterdam has left me completely wrecked. So much, that after almost a year, I write these words still sighing. I plan to go back. I search for the airplane tickets and thousands of square meters of the most cozy apartmants and hotels. If I dare to click on proceed to checkout, you’ll be the first to know, until than, a new post is brewing with the nostalgic reflection on all the beauties of Belgium.
